Project

The Kirrip biik Park was created as part of the Merri-bek City Council’s ‘A park close to home’ initiative. The site was originally home to two dilapidated homes, one weatherboard, the other red brick.

Following the purchase and clearance of the site, the council put out a tender to transform the land into a locals park, where the many young families in the area could gather and enjoy being outdoors.

Design

Following a successful tender submission, the Urbania team put together a comprehensive landscape package for the park.

This covered a large scale civil works, including site cut, mound shaping, extensive earthworks, installation of stormwater drainage, electrical connections, as well as meandering coloured concrete paths and in-situ concrete seating.

Landscaping of the site was extensive, with large areas of turf installed. Mudstone feature boulders add drama to the park, along with native plantings. The installation of an automatic irrigation system has ensured the park has since become something of a lush oasis in an urban setting.

Dotted throughout Kirrip biik are a number of handcrafted timber and corten steel sculptures, depicting flora and fauna significant to the Wurundjeri people. There are also raised wicking garden beds, which are hugely popular with the locals for community vegie gardening.

To ensure the comfort of all park users, Urbania installed timber arbours, a park shelter, outdoor furniture including a large communal table, and also drinking fountains, because having fun outdoors can be thirsty work sometimes.

Equipment

Centrepiece of the Kirrip biik Park is the stunning moveart Climbslide playsculpture, which Urbania supplied and installed. Its innovative design catches the eye of every parent in the park, whilst their kids go crazy clambering all over it.

We also installed all of the playground equipment, including wheelchair accessible slides and swings, as well as a fun water play area that is always popular with the little ones.
