Project
The York Street Park in Pascoe Vale, is a fun new playspace created for local families as part of the Merri-bek Council’s Park Close to Home initiative. Designed for all ages and abilities, the park combines play, recreation, and community amenities in a lush, vibrant setting.
Design
Blue-tongue lizards are often seen in the local area, so the council’s landscape architect, Wendy Skala, used it as her design inspiration. The central paved area of the park, which encompasses family shelters, shade trellis and the water play channel, echoes the form of a Blue-tongue.
The park makes extensive use of indigenous plantings, all of which provide a welcoming, naturalistic environment. Deciduous trees were also used, which as they mature will provide much needed summer shade and, of course, colourful autumn foliage.
Services
Urbania undertook an extensive end-to-end landscaping program, including demolition of existing site assets, earthworks and site-cutting, installation of stormwater drainage, plumbing and electrical works, and an irrigation system.
Concrete pathways were installed throughout the park, including decorative concrete for the blue-tongue lizard theme. Landscape logs and boulders were used to enhance the naturalistic feel of the indigenous plantings.
Equipment
Outdoor furniture supplied and installed during the project included tables and benches. Other amenities included an electric BBQ, drinking fountains, toilet facilities, a pair of shelters and also shade sails.
A variety of play equipment was installed in the park, including a colourful play tower, a set of swings, and also accessible play equipment. A Richter Spielgeräte Climbing Stack provides excellent play value. Made from debarked sustainable timber, it helps children build confidence and master the art of balance.
In the water play area, a Richter Spielgeräte Water Play Pump with timber channels and sluice gate encourages problem solving in younger children as them dam and pump water through the system.
