Project
Burnie Arts is the cultural hub of Tasmania’s north-west, and it has just had a remarkable makeover. The $20.5 million redevelopment by Burnie City Council has transformed the former Civic Centre, built in 1976, into one space for art and museum collections, performing arts, functions, workshops and events.
The vision was simple but ambitious: break down cultural barriers and make sure everyone is welcome. The redeveloped centre officially opened in November 2025.
Design
Designed by Xsquared Architects and built by Vos Construction & Joinery, the redevelopment turned the old internal courtyard into a light-filled glazed atrium. The atrium is now the heart of the building.
It was the perfect stage for a play sculpture. Visitors of all ages can stop, sit, climb and connect between exhibitions and shows. Outside, the new Civic Plaza adds landscaped spaces for entertainment and relaxation.
Equipment
Urbania supplied and installed two moveart play sculptures for the project. Inside the atrium is the Climbslide 6.8. Adults see a beautifully designed sculpture, while kids see a small world full of adventures. At 6.8 metres long, it invites climbing, sliding, balancing and simply resting.
Outside in the Civic Plaza, the Climbslide 4.9 brings the same flowing form to a more compact five-metre piece.
Every moveart design grows from a single form, the double helix of DNA. All pieces are made from sustainable Accoya timber, with a minimum outdoor lifespan of 25 years. They’re low maintenance and resistant to vandalism, too.
