A community playspace celebrating maritime history for the Port of Melbourne Corporation.
Project
Working in collaboration with Oculus Studios, and the Richter Spielgeräte design team, a playspace was created steeped in the traditions of seafaring and the maritime history of the area.
Nestled in a sandy foreshore setting, its centrepiece is a dramatic wooden tower with crow’s nest and spiral slide, where kids of all ages can gaze out across Port Phillip bay in the hope of spotting a pirate ship.
Design
During community consultation the local people said they wanted to give children the chance to get out and experience nature even though they were within a highly urban environment.
It was also crucial that playground equipment was high-quality, low-maintenance and offered a range of challenges for children of all ages.
Equipment
Urbania worked through several different designs with Tract, the landscape architect. Our partner Richter Spielgeräte supplied a variety of timber based equipment, including a castle tower & tunnel slide combination, a climbing structure, balance blocks, jumping discs and the ever popular car-tyre swing.
Review
Well known blogger Mama Knows had a very enjoyable day of play beneath the railway.
