Kirrip Biik Park

A park close to home in the streets of Coburg.

Nestled in the heart of Coburg, Kirrip Biik Park is a vibrant example of community-driven urban renewal. Developed by Urbania and Merri-bek City Council, it's part of their 2017 'A Park Close to Home' initiative, which ensures every resident is within easy walking distance of green space. This fosters healthier lifestyles, social connections, and a deeper appreciation for the outdoors in densely populated areas like Coburg.

The park's creation began with the acquisition and clearance of two dilapidated properties. Merri-bek Council then sought proposals to transform the land into an inclusive local park, specifically designed for the area's growing number of young families. The result is a thoughtfully designed haven encouraging play, relaxation, and community gatherings amid nature.

The park's name, Kirrip Biik, translates to 'Friend Place' from the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung language of the Traditional Owners. This fitting name reflects its role as a communal hub and Merri-bek City's commitment to honouring First Nations heritage in public spaces.

Urbania's End-to-End Landscaping Excellence

Urbania was the head contractor, delivering a comprehensive hard and soft civil landscaping package for Kirrip Biik Park. Their work included civil works, site cut, mound shaping, bulk earthworks, stormwater drainage, electrical upgrades, and all concreting—including coloured footpaths and a curved seating wall.

They also installed handcrafted timber artwork, a park shelter, and play equipment such as the moveArt Climbslide 5.0. An automatic irrigation system supports the extensive planting, turf, and other softscape elements, creating a resilient green oasis that aligns with the project's vision of honouring cultural and environmental heritage while providing a welcoming space for the community.

Inclusive Play and Cultural Delights

Since its December 2023 opening, Kirrip Biik Park has delighted residents with a host of inclusive and imaginative features. Highlights include wheelchair-accessible play equipment like slides, swings, and the standout moveArt Climbslide 5.0 twisting climber, a refreshing water play area, and nature-inspired elements such as logs and rocks.

Cultural tributes are evident in hand-crafted timber sculptures depicting local flora and fauna significant to the Wurundjeri people. Practical amenities include a large shelter with a communal table, high seating for elderly visitors, and wicking beds with a share table for community gardening.

This thoughtfully curated space promotes physical activity, social interaction, and a sense of belonging, quickly becoming a cherished gathering spot that enriches daily life in Coburg.
